NEW ACQUISITION:
Mainstream is delighted to have acquired world rights to CHERIE BLAIR’S SECRET DIARY. Published to coincide with the release of Cherie Blair’s official memoir, this secret diary, which was long hidden in a Harvey Nichols bag under the stairs at No.10 reveals the inner life of this formidable lady. Reminiscent of the SECRET DIARY OF JOHN MAJOR Aged 47 ¾ which Private Eye published so successfully many years ago it will be Mainstream’s big humour book for Christmas 2008. Iain Macgregor at Mainstream bought world rights from Mandy Little at Watson and Little.
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that England and British Lion’s rugby hero, Andy Ripley, won Rugby Book of the Year at the British Sports Book Awards last week. RIPLEY’S WORLD, his inspirational book about his battle with prostate cancer, will be rushed out in paperback on 1 May.
MA, HE SOLD ME FOR A FEW CIGARETTES has been sold to Platano in Portugal. Audio rights have already been sold to Oakhill Audio. MA, HE SOLD ME FOR A FEW CIGARETTES has already been a bestseller in trade paperback with a no.1 in Ireland and sales of 128K throughout the UK trade. The mass market edition will be published in May and we already have confirmed orders from most of the major customers indicating that we have another Sunday Times bestseller on our hands.
PUBLICITY:
Interest from the national press in KITCHENER'S LAST VOLUNTEER by Henry Allingham has been flooding in, including The Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, The Times and Saga Magazine. The book is due out in October, and we're all incredibly excited about it.
Our cycling books continue to get some great publicity. Johan Bruyneel's book WE MIGHT AS WELL WIN will be extracted in the Tour de France issue of Procycling Magazine. SEX, LIES AND HANDLEBAR TAPE is also being extracted in their official Tour de France guide, and is featuring in just about every cycling magazine and website there is.
With URBAN SMUGGLER due to be published on 3 April, we have now confirmed an interview in Shortlist magazine, which is currently distributing well over 400,000 copies per week in cities around the UK. The story will also be well covered in the black press, with interviews in Pride Magazine and The Voice, and 3 April issue of Pick Me Up magazine will carry an interview with Andrew Pritchard's partner, Amber.
With April looming, interest in THE BIGAMIST by Mary Turner Thomson has also been streaming in, despite a massive publicity campaign on publication of THE OTHER MRS JORDAN last June. With interviews on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour and in weekly magazine Grazia both looking likley, and interviews already confirmed with the Scottish Daily Mirror, the Sunday Post and the Edinburgh Evening News, the publication looks set to be another publicity success story. And with Will Jordan due to appeal his deportation order on 8 April, there's yet another great news hook for this fascinating story.
It's a big week for launches at Mainstream, with three authors holding launch parties on Thursday 27 March - two in London and one in Edinburgh. Andrew Pritchard will be launching URBAN SMUGGLER at Shoreditch House in London, while in Islington, Paul Howard will be holding a launch for his book SEX, LIES AND HANDLEBAR TAPE, which looks set to be a great event. Meanwhile, Arnold Maran will be hosting a launch for his book MAFIA: INSIDE THE DARK HEART at Edinburgh's famous Italian restaurant Valvona & Crolla.
Congratulations to Paul Murphy and Claire Rose who have both been promoted from Assistant Editors to full blown Editors.. We are also pleased to announce that we have appointed a new Publicity Assistant. Sarah McKee who has done work experience at Canongate and in PR in New Zealand will join the company on Thursday 10 April reporting to Publicity Manager, Fiona Atherton.
