Scottish News July 2004

On the MakeWelcome to the second issue of Books From Scotland. There have been some controversial Scottish books published in the last few months. Once the furore surrounding publication of Henry McLeish's memoirs died down it was replaced by a media outcry regarding ON THE MAKE, How the Scots Took Over London by David Stenhouse. Much as the press claim they want exclusives they were falling over themselves to cover this book and coverage is still pouring in. The FT referred to it as 'entertaining and feisty', Scotland on Sunday called it 'intelligent and sprightly' and London's Evening Standard were even able to call it 'entertaining and informative'.

Roots of Stone With Friends in High Places 101 Bike Routes in Scotland Scotland: National Cycle Network

Other Scottish interest titles which have been published recently include ROOTS OF STONE by Hugh Allison; WITH FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES by Malcolm Slesser; 101 BIKE ROUTES IN SCOTLAND and SCOTLAND: THE NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK by Harry Henniker. Reviews and opening pages of all our books can be seen by typing the book title or author surname into the search engine on our home page.

Our latest Scottish bestseller list refers to books sold in June so I think Fathers Day can explain why FANATICAL ABOUT FOOTBALL has shot up to No.1. ON THE MAKE is at No.6 and McRAE'S BATTALION continues to hold it's own at No.3. One of the most notable aspects of our Scottish bestseller list as opposed to our general one is that backlist titles sell as well as newly published books. Old favourites like SCOTTISH CLAN AND FAMILY NAMES crop up regularly.

Trust for Scotland and the book will be launched at the Bannockburn Visitor Centre on March 27th. If you are interested in attending please contact Lindsay.farquharson@mainstreampublishing.com
