Sports News March 2008

Thank you for subscribing to our Mainstream Sport Newsletter.

Fantastic news this month is that RIPLEY’S WORLD has won best rugby book of the year at the British Sports Book Awards! Andy Ripley is the charismatic, former England and British Lions player whose book about his battle with prostate cancer received glowing reviews when it was published at the end of last year.

Mainstream has a good track record, being one of the few publishers to have won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award twice, with ENDLESS WINTER (another rugby book) and DARK TRADE (about boxing). We are all thrilled for Andy and for his editor, Claire Rose, who worked so hard on the book.

At the end of last year we had bestsellers in the form of Scottish footballer, Barry Ferguson’s autobiography BLUE and Gaelic footballer, Oisin McConville was in the Irish Top Ten with his autobiography, THE GAMBLER. In Wales, the clear bestseller was ALFIE, the autobiography of rugby international, Gareth Thomas.

Sports books published in 2008 include rugby league book, BEING EDDIE WARING, The Life and Times of a Sporting Icon by Tony Hannan, which had great coverage in the media and is selling really well, and BOXING’S HALL OF SHAME by Thomas Myler. The mass market edition retails at £7.99, much cheaper than the trade paperback which was published last year to great critical acclaim:

‘An expose, it’s a knockout’ Irish Mail on Sunday
‘The tale leaves a feeling of unearthing a whole new side to the fight game’ Scotland on Sunday

In March we launched the intriguingly titled, SEX, LIES AND HANDLEBAR TAPE by Paul Howard. It’s the astonishing biography of Jacques Anquetil, a five-times winner of the Tour de France whose private life was as fascinating as his professional one.

One of the biggest and best sports books Mainstream has ever published is THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES AND THE IOC which has been completely updated in anticipation of the Olympic Games in Beijing. David Miller has been a journalist since 1956 and has covered 16 Summer and Winter Olympic Games. The Observer has referred to the book as ‘handsomely illustrated and painstakingly researched.’ and The Times claimed it ‘will become the standard work on the subject.

Mainstream prides itself on publishing books across the sporting spectrum. In this list alone we have rugby union, rugby league, football, Gaelic football, boxing, cycling and in the Olympic book almost everything. We also have a strong backlist of golf books and have just signed an undoubted Christmas bestseller by an international cricketer, which will be published later this year.

In order to maintain our reputation as one of the UK’s leading sports publishers we have appointed a new Associate Publisher to look out for new books so if you think you know of a sports book which deserves to be published do contact him at iain.Macgregor@mainstreampublishing.com and he will be happy to discuss it with you.

Best wishes
