At the end of 2008 we had two Scottish bestsellers in the form of football personality books, TORMENTED by Andy McLaren and MARVELLOUS MARVIN by Marvin Andrews.

FINDING MERLIN by Adam Ardrey which claimed that Merlin actually hailed from somewhere near Glasgow got some terrific reviews and as a result we have sold US rights to Overlook Press in New York. FINDING ARTHUR will follow in 2009.

John Purser’s updated and much sought after, SCOTLAND’S MUSIC, came back into print just before Christmas and remains a classic.

Our first Scottish interest title of 2008 was DARK HEART, Tales from Edinburgh’s Town Jail by Douglas Skelton. Skelton has an impressive backlist of Scottish True Crime titles and DARK HEART had some terrific coverage in the press.

Although MAFIA is not strictly speaking a Scottish book, the author Arnold Maran lives in Edinburgh and in the introduction writes charmingly of his childhood in post war Scotland, hiding the smell of Italian cooking from the neighbours who were still distrustful of anyone from Italy! A member of the distinguished Valvona & Crolla dynasty he launched his book on 27 March at Cento Tre on George Street in Edinburgh.

Two of our lead Scottish books have changed title since last year. THE OTHER MRS JORDAN becomes THE BIGAMIST with a fabulous mass market jacket and even before first publication (scheduled for June) FALLING by Jeff Randall has been changed to LOVE HURTS reflecting the requirements of the head office buyers as much as the content! It will be accompanied by a major outdoor advertising campaign and high profile publicity drive.

For further information about our Scottish books or if you have a fabulous idea for a book contact our Associate Publisher iain.Macgregor@mainstreampublishing.com who will be delighted to discuss it with you.

Best wishes
