News 7 January 2005

Saudi babylonMainstream is delighted to have acquired the rights to SAUDI BABYLON written by Sandy Mitchell who was imprisoned and tortured in Saudi Arabia and Mark Hollingsworth, an investigative journalist, who puts Sandy's experience at the hands of the Saudi and British governments into context. It combines an intense human interest story with a much broader comment on the hypocrisy of fundamentalism. In this secret history of Saudi Arabia Hollingsworth describes how post September 11th the Saudi authorities prevented the FBI questioning the families of the hijackers (15 out of 19 were Saudi) and reveals how the Saudi Royals funded Islamic insurrection abroad in order to protect themselves at home. Mainstream control world rights and will publish in May 2005. For further information contact fiona.brownlee@mainstreampublishing.com

Essex BoysESSEX BOYS by Bernard O'Mahoney is one of Mainstream's all time bestsellers. It looks set to get another boost with the news that the case of the men convicted of the infamous 'Essex Boys' murders is to be referred to the Court of Appeal. Michael Steele and Jack Whomes were convicted at the Old Bailey in January 1998 of the murders of gangsters Pat Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe after a trial lasting more than four months. The gangland shootings were later turned into a film starring Sean Bean. Bernard O'Mahoney's latest book HATELAND will be published in April 2005.
