Mainstream
is delighted to have acquired the rights to THE
LONE BRIT ON 13 by Christopher Chance which will be
one of our lead Spring 2005 titles. Following in the vein of
international bestsellers THE DAMAGE DONE, GRASS and HELL'S
PRISONER, THE LONE BRIT ON 13 is a gripping true story
of violence, degradation and adventure. Convicted and imprisoned
for drug smuggling between North Africa and Spain, the lone Brit
on Wing 13, Chance reveals the horrors he experienced among cut-throat
villains and guards in the netherworld of the Spanish prison
system. As the sole British inmate, Chance was a prime target
for the intimidating Spanish hard-men who thrived on cruelty
and treachery. But his martial arts skills and Samurai philosophy
proved to be more than a match for his aggressors. Once a respected
and successful businessman admired by his peers, Chance took
one wrong turn in life and lost everything except the love and
support of his loyal wife. On eventually gaining his freedom
Chance's goal was to return to the straight and narrow and endeavour
to bring happiness back into the lives of his family. THE LONE
BRIT ON 13 is the genuine account of an adrenalin-addicted Englishman
single-handedly defeating intimidation, racism and potential
drug addiction in the bleak surroundings of a Spanish prison.
It is a shocking and controversial read that will offend, humour
and ultimately entertain with its unflinching honesty and brutal
realism. World rights are available. For further information

Another
new acquisition for Spring 2005 is LAST CHANCE TO EAT by
Gina Mallet. Acquired from McLelland and Stuart in Canada it has
just been published in the US by Norton where it has received a
glowing review in the New Yorker:
'This gourmand's polemic cum memoir may have an unoriginal premise-that cuisine is being ruined by the demise of the local producer, the spread of bland, chemically altered ingredients, and the influence of hysterical dietary fatwas-but Mallet's impatient scorn for anyone standing between her and the next scrumptious morsel is engaging...Mallet's strength lies in the sensual evocation of food; even a vegetarian might find pleasure in her rhapsody over the perfect steak.'

Confirmed PR for the Autumn titles is continuing to pour on. Having had a request from the all important Richard and Judy, Channel 4 show when we first announced the acquisition of Diane Blood's autobiography we have now had confirmation that they will DEFINITELY have her as a guest on Friday 22nd October.
BBC TV's Heaven and Earth will follow on Sunday 24th.
The men's mags are going wild for AMONGST THE MARINES which is just as well as the more sedate newspapers were concerned about the effect it would have on their readers!
Confirmation
also just in that Elizabeth Gabriel, author of FLYING CROOKED will
be interviewed in a national newspaper to run at the time of publication
in October. The same newspaper has interviewed Armin Lehmann for
a feature to run this weekend.
We
have had a great response to the serialisation of 1001
NIGHTS WITHOUT SEX which appeared in The Times earlier
this week. Suzanne Schlosberg is now being interviewed by two other
national newspapers in addition to the extract which is appearing
in RED magazine and the review which is appearing in COSMOPOLITAN.
A belated farewell to Lizzie Cameron who left this week and a big welcome to Emily Bland who replaces her as our jacket designer. She can be contacted at emily.bland@mainstreampublishing.com
