Flying CrookedMainstream are delighted to have acquired rights to FLYING CROOKED by Elizabeth Gabriel from the Edwards Fuglewicz Agency. It is a candid autobiographical novel about the unusual way in which one woman coped with cancer diagnosis and a subsequent mastectomy. There are many books about the processes people go through when they have cancer. What makes FLYING CROOKED different is the way in which Elizabeth Gabriel accepts the disease and its consequences. She continues to enjoy life, refuses radiotherapy and rejects the idea of wearing a prosthesis after one of her breasts has been removed. The open, direct and unsentimental manner in which Gabriel describes her decisions as well as her experiences in hospital and out of it are deeply refreshing. Elizabeth Gabriel is the pen name of Jan Michael, the respected Dutch and Scandinavian literary agent who is also the author of four novels and six childrens books. FLYING CROOKED has already been published by De Geus in Holland. Mainstream will publish in October 2004 to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Peter MacKenzie is the more publicity shy of our great leaders so I thought I would take the opportunity to include a rare photo of him for the sake of those of you who have dealt with him but never met him. He is pictured with Lorraine Fannin of the Scottish Publishers Association at the London Book Fair looking unusually dapper!
