Mainstream
are delighted to have acquired rights to FLYING CROOKED by
Elizabeth Gabriel from the Edwards Fuglewicz Agency. It is a candid
autobiographical novel about the unusual way in which one woman
coped with cancer diagnosis and a subsequent mastectomy. There
are many books about the processes people go through when they
have cancer. What makes FLYING CROOKED different is the way in
which Elizabeth Gabriel accepts the disease and its consequences.
She continues to enjoy life, refuses radiotherapy and rejects the
idea of wearing a prosthesis after one of her breasts has been
removed. The open, direct and unsentimental manner in which Gabriel
describes her decisions as well as her experiences in hospital
and out of it are deeply refreshing. Elizabeth Gabriel is the pen
name of Jan Michael, the respected Dutch and Scandinavian literary
agent who is also the author of four novels and six childrens books.
FLYING CROOKED has already been published by De Geus in Holland.
Mainstream will publish in October 2004 to coincide with Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. For further information contact fiona.brownlee@mainstreampublishing.com
The DANCING
IN THE SEA deal has been finalised. It will be published
by Random House Australia at the same time as we publish in the
UK. Media interest is continuing to gather with serial bids from
two major national newspapers.
We
have also had an offer for French rights for THE REAL NUREYEV and
an offer for serial rights from a broadsheet newspaper. Carolyn
Soutar will be appearing at the Edinburgh Festival this summer
to talk about the book prior to publication in September.
SOLDIER
FIVE remains in the Sunday Times Top Ten, aided by reviews
in THE SPECTATOR on 3rd April and a news story in the Sunday
Times.
POWDER
WARS is getting an enormous amount of publicity following
the extracts in the Sunday Mirror on 28th March. Interviews with
author Graham Johnson have appeared in several newspapers and
he is doing a series of interviews with BBC radio stations.
Cameron
White aka MR NASTY will be interviewed on the
Simon Mayo Show, BBC Radio 5 Live on 15th April between 3 and 4pm.
THE SUNDAY TIMES interview will be running at the end of April
and THE SUNDAY MIRROR have also requested an interview. Reviews
are confirmed in JACK, ZOO, ARENA and FHM magazines.
Mickey
Vann has been generating publicity for his book GIVE ME
A RING since we received interest in film rights from
an LA based production company. THE SUN are already planning to
run a feature.
England
Expects, the TV drama for which Nick Ryan was creative producer,
aired on Monday 5th April. It had great reviews and Nick had two
major features in THE INDEPENDENT and THE SCOTSMAN linked to the
drama which also mentioned his book HOMELAND.
HOMELAND is published in paperback in the UK this month and will
be published by Routledge in the US on 15th May 2004. Nick is speaking
at the Philosophyfootball.com event 'Always be an Ingerland' on
St Georges Day, April 23rd at Café Kick in Shoreditch and
will be appearing in two events at the Edinburgh Book Festival
on 17th August to talk about hooligans and the future of Europe.
And Finally...Peter MacKenzie is the more publicity shy of our great leaders so I thought I would take the opportunity to include a rare photo of him for the sake of those of you who have dealt with him but never met him. He is pictured with Lorraine Fannin of the Scottish Publishers Association at the London Book Fair looking unusually dapper!
