News 27 October 2003
One of the most popular books at the Frankfurt Book Fair was PICKING
THE BONES by Geoffrey Regan. A new acquisition, which will be published
by Mainstream in 2004. A historian with over 30 books to his name, Regan
argues that history has been rewritten by the media and politicians and
attempts to dispel the myths and reveal the facts, that the US and UK
are not always the 'goodies'.
Other books which got a lot of interest
at Frankfurt were 2004 titles THE REAL NUREYEV, LAST BRITISH
HERO, FRIENDLY FIRE and our lead title
for this season, IN HITLER'S BUNKER.
There was a flurry of rights activity
immediately prior to the Fair. BAGHDAD'S SPY was sold to Mlada Fronta
in the Czech Republic and an offer
from Poland ison the table. We have had an offer from Germany for THE
JOURNEYMAN and have sold BOTH SIDES OF THE FENCE to Tirion in Holland.
I am also delighted to be able to report that HOMELAND is
finally getting the recognition it deserves. Latin American rights have
been sold to
Oceano in Mexico, Italian rights are going to be wound up this week and
we have already sold North American rights to Routledge. Nick Ryan, author
of HOMELAND, appeared on the Radio 4 programme 'Thinking Allowed' on
Wednesday 22nd October, talking about the rise of the far right. He has
also been invited to Hungary by the Central European University in Budapest
on the 10th November which marks the International Day Against Facism
and Anti-Semitism.
On the PR front, the great showman, Frank Maloney is
unsurprisingly stealing the show. He will be a guest speaker at three
National Sporting Club
dinners (in Manchester, Newcastle and London) in December. NO
BALONEY continues to get some great write-ups in the press. There has been coverage
in THE STAR, EXPRESS, SUNDAY TIMES, THE GUARDIAN and THE DAILY MAIL who
referred to it as 'one of the most honest boxing books of our time.'

For a company which doesn't tend to have launch parties we have been
on a bit of a roll recently. NO BALONEY was launched
at The Scene (formerly The Henry Cooper) at midday on Monday 20th October
followed by an evening launch for GRASS at 115 Bar at Hodgsons. FANATICAL
ABOUT FOOTBALL will be launched on Thursday 30th October at
the National Football Museum in Glasgow. On Monday 10th October we are
back in London for another two launches. At 3.30pm Sebastian Coe will
host a launch for ATHENS TO ATHENS at the House of Commons,
which will be attended by former Olympic winners, and in the evening
there will be launch for MOODY by Wensley Clarkson at
115 Bar, which will apparently be attended by a bevy of Page 3 girls!
There
was of course the all singing, all dancing Bay City Rollers launch for SHANG
A LANG on Wednesday 8th October. Les McKeown is now on tour
in Australia but before he left he was interviewed for THE TIMES magazine's
'Brief Encounter' section and by Sean O'Hagan for THE OBSERVER.
William
Hill shortlisted title, DAYS LIKE THESE by Jamie Reid,
was extracted in THE RACING POST on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th October.
The author is also a regular contributor to THE OBSERVER who will run
full credit to the book.
And Finally...
News of another Mainstream baby. A rather green Fiona Brownlee bravely
battled through back to back meetings at Frankfurt. No.2 is due on April
16th, six weeks after Baby Atherton / Campbell. We shall have to start
a Mainstream crèche at this rate!
