News 28 February 2003
We
are delighted to have acquired world rights for THE LOOKED AFTER
KID by Paolo Hewitt. Finished copies have arrived and it looks
wonderful. It will be published in B format paperback in May 2003 and
includes quotes from high profile authors and publications:
'I cannot tell you how moved, touched, horrified and amused I was.
I rate it with The Catcher in the Rye' Jilly Cooper
'This is his tenth book and his experience as a writer is evident.
Despite the emotional weight of the subject, The Looked After Kid is
a pleasure to read.'
New Statesman
'He offers a rare insight into the psyche of those who grow up without
the unconditional love of a parent.'
The Times
World rights are available. For further information or to request a
reading copy contact fiona.brownlee@mainstreampublishing.com
We
have received a good offer from China for rights to ATHENS TO
ATHENS: THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE AND
THE OLYMPIC GAMES 1894-2004.
Latin American Spanish rights to MASTERMINDS OF TERROR were
sold this week. Tessa Estevez at ACER conducted the deal.
Following the UK serial deal the international publication date of MASTERMINDS
OF TERROR has been moved from April to May 8th. UK, Australian,
Dutch, German and Latin American editions will all be published then
with serial in each country running the weekend before.
HOMELAND is
published this week and has been getting fabulous reviews in the national
press:
" this is a terrifying book that provokes nightmares, and makes
me fear for the future of our civilised society... He confesses his
own terror in meeting them [the neo-nazis] but like the good reporter
he is, lets these men hang themselves with their own obscene opinions
- and actions... Writing it cannot have been easy... there could be
no finer testament to his talent as a reporter... an important book,
one that should appear in the bookcases of every politician in the
land."
Geoffrey Wansell, Daily Mail (book was Critic's Choice):
" Ryan's hard-hitting look at racist and fascist factions is
topical to say the least... the overall picture of hatred on our streets
is vivid."
(4 star rating) The Mirror
" Both a personal odyssey and a social commentary, not simply
a story of undercover intrigue nor dry political analysis... (this)
is a book for anyone curious about the nature of extremism. Makes for
uncomfortable, even frightening, reading."
Christopher Ondaatje, The Literary Review.
It will be a lead title at the London Book Fair. World rights are available.

BAGHDAD'S
SPY is getting a tremendous amount of interest. In addition
to the serial confirmed and the high profile interviews on BBC TV news
and BBC Radio 4 & 5 we have had requests for interviews with Corinne
Souza from virtually every national paper. To date The Times, The Independent,
The Daily Mail, The Sunday Express, The Mirror and The Telegraph have
put bids in.
High
profile introductions have been confirmed to some of our lead Autumn
titles. Irvine Welsh has already written the foreword to SHANG
A LANG, the autobiography of former Bay City Roller Les McKeown
and Howard Marks has confirmed that he will write introductions to two
new books. WHITE GOLD by Eugene Costello and GRASS by
Phil Sparrowhawk with Martin King and Martin Knight are both true accounts
of international drug smuggling operations. WHITE GOLD is the story of
a naïve fisherman from the West of Scotland but the man behind GRASS,
Phil Sparrowhawk, was a savvy businessman and former colleague of Marks
who ran a successful smuggling operation before he was eventually extradited
from Thailand by the US Government.
Another
successful rogue, Frank Abagnale author of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN,
celebrated a BAFTA win earlier this week when Christopher Walken won
Best Supporting Actor for his role as Frank's father in the film. The
book appeared at Number 4 in the Publishing News media tie-in bestseller
list last week.
Mark
Perryman, author of PHILOSOPHICAL FOOTBALL; THE
INGERLAND FACTOR; HOOLIGAN WARS and GOING
ORIENTAL is getting coverage in the national press for his anti
war campaign. His company, Philosophy Football, is producing Stop the
War T shirts proceeds of which will go to the Stop the War coalition.

And Finally...
Congratulations to Canongate who won Publisher of the Year at the British
Book Awards, proof if proof were needed that publishing can thrive outside
London. It is great news not only for Scottish publishing but also for
independents. Mainstream celebrates 25 years of independent publishing
this year.
