Foot and Mouth Disease
Last
year saw THE YEAR OF THE PYRES by Judith Cook (184018 5503) being
published. With the publication this week of the Government reports into
the Foot and Mouth crisis, the questions and points made in Judith's
book, in every respect, beat the reports to it, but in a more concise
and readable way. From the politics, not least what went on so that Blair
could call an election, to the refusal to learn anything from the 1968
outbreak, the refusal to call in the army for weeks and the refusal to
accept the use of vaccinations are all discussed in The Year of the Pyres.
The book ends with a series of questions, only some of which were answered
in the reports. Judith also called for a public inquiry, which was, of
course refused. The book is available for sale on our website and copies
are available for review. Contact Sharon
Atherton for a review copy or to take an extract.

The Looked After Kid
Paolo
Hewitt's book, THE LOOKED AFTER KID (184018 5821) continues to
get rave reviews. The Big Issue says 'Having documented the lives of
various mods and rockers, Hewitt now turns to his own childhood, growing
up in orphanages in the 1970s. A candid account of some brutal experiences,
it is in turns a painfully sad and breathtakingly inspiring read told
with dignity and colour. Just as he fills you with disgust and anger
for his tormentors, so does Hewitt fill you with admiration at the human
spirit's ability to overcome the cruellest of fates. What a god send
this is for all those who suffered unholy childhoods.'
There is another review due in the New Statesman soon.
The book has yet to make an appearance in the book review pages of national
newspapers, though Paolo has given excellent interviews to The Guardian
and The Times. Any Literary Editor wishing to receive a copy please contact
Sharon Atherton on 0131 550 7513. This is the only book to have united
Jilly Cooper and Irvine Welsh. Both showered it with praise - 'courageous
and moving', 'brilliant' and 'terribly touching'.
New Books in-house
We've
just received the finished books for PETER LORIMER: Leeds and Scotland
Hero (184018 6127) by Peter Lorimer and Phil Rostron. Peter's 76mph
strike left many a goalkeeper clutching thin air as he waltzed into the
record books as a permanent member of the fantastic Leeds United team.
He made his debut aged 15 years 289 days. He remains the only Leeds player
to have scored over 200 goals, and won 21 caps for Scotland. The book
is published in September.
