WORLD CUP FEVER
BRAZIL v GERMANY World Cup Final.
Most
of Scotland seemed to invest in Brazil shirts as soon as they found out
that Brazil were playing England in the semi final so a lot of yellow
shirts were visible on Sunday. What football fans might not know is the
link between British and Brazilian football. Besides the presence in
Brazil of British players, coaches and referees, there were valuable
visits to the country by a number of clubs, including Exeter City, Motherwell
and Arsenal. These contacts contributed to the creation of a unique Brazilian
style of play, one based on improvisation and speed, one, which wins
World Cups as, is detailed in AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT GAME by Aidan
Hamilton. (1 84018 0412)
Mainstream
have also published books about German football. AN AMBER GLOW by
Peter Allen (1 84018 354 3) details the story of the legendary football
used in the World Cup final of 1966. Following England's victory against
the Germans, a losing midfielder, Helmut Haller, stole the amber talisman.
Its story was subsequently mythologised as a symbol of England's lost
greatness, as prime ministers and international managers presided over
a period of devastating failure on and off the field.
And Finally...
This is my last week at Mainstream until December. If you need to contact
me please do so before July 5th. As of next Friday Lianne Harvey will
be writing the Mainstream newsletter and I shall be reading it from home
as I attempt to breast feed, change nappies and cope with sleepless nights!
Best wishes
