BADFELLAS,
FIFA Family at War by John Sugden and Alan Tomlinson (1 84018 6844)
World football's governing body FIFA has claimed credit for the success
of the football World Cup and the expansion of the world game generally,
while behind the scenes the administration of the world game is in
a shambles. BADFELLAS catalogues FIFA's expanding fortunes, recurrent
crises and internal rivalries, and traces the growth of the World Cup
from its politically driven origins in Uruguay in 1930 to one of the
world's most lucrative media spectacles.

THE
ART OF WILL MACLEAN, Symbols of Survival 1972-2002 by Duncan Macmillan
(1 84018 689 5) Will MacLean is one of the outstanding artists of his
generation in Scotland. His art is rooted in his knowledge of the Highlands,
the Highland people and their history. In the text, Duncan Macmillan
shows how, like the poetry of the great Gaelic poet, Sorley MacLean,
who has contributed a foreword to this book, Will MacLean's art reaches
out from its source in the artist's experience to touch on universal
themes, especially on the increasingly urgent topic of man and nature.
Duncan MacMillan is the author of Scottish Art 1460-2000.

TOM
SHIELDS, THE KEN SMITH YEARS by Tom Shields and Ken Smith (1 84018
688 7) The fifth book from that man at The Herald Diary. It is the
usual scintillating mixture of anecdote, pith and fable. This time,
however, Shields does not bare the blame alone. This tome is culled
from the Diary columns that Shields and Ken Smith wrote together before
Shields left the paper. Tom Shields' writing is featured in four other
Mainstream books: Tom Shields' Diary, Tom Shields Too, Tom Shields
Free at Last and Tom Shields Goes Forth.

DUEL
IN THE SUN, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in the Battle of Turnberry
by Michael Corcoran (1 84018 662 8) 2002 is the 25th anniversary of
what is arguably the most exciting and important moment in modern golf
history: the 1977 British Open, where a young talent named Tom Watson
defeated the legendary Jack Nicklaus. A Duel in the Sun charts a rich
history of the Open before moving on to paint in-depth, colourful portraits
of Nicklaus and Watson. It draws on a wide range of interviews with
the stars, fellow competitors, caddies, commentators and spectators,
to tell a magnificent story of the rise of a fiercely driven new hero
- and the poignant grace of a wise champion welcoming him to the summit
of the game. An experienced writer and editor, Michael Corcoran has
written or co-written four books, including The PGA Tour Complete Book
of Golf.
