NEWLY SIGNED TITLES
Contracts have been flying around this week. We have just signed up seven new
titles:
DEATH AND GLORY by Graeme Obree. World rights.
Graeme Obree was a prodigious cyclist from his junior years onwards,
but after a narrow escape from a jail sentence and an even narrower reprieve
from a suicide attempt in his early 20s, his career was sporadic. He
struggled with undiagnosed manic depression and personality disorder
but despite it all he went on to achieve world fame by smashing numerous
world records. His career faltered at the Olympics at Atlanta when he
descended in to deep depression and near suicide despite being a favourite
for the gold medal. His book would be a good factual account of his cycling
exploits alone, but by being intertwined with his turbulent life, this
book is a fascinating and touching story about one man's struggle against
adversity to become number one at his sports, as well as his personal
struggle against mental illness.

FIGHTING CHANCE by Derick Allsop. World rights.
A shocking, sometimes humorous, always candid insight into the boxing
trade. Derick Allsop joins the boxers and trainers on the road, at the
shows, in dingy gyms and in the privacy of their homes over a two-year
period to give a revealing and detailed insight into the trade. Their
candour has produced a gripping human story of fear and hope, tragedy
and salvation, despair and humour. Boxing, they maintain, is their lifeline;
an escape from the clutches of crime, drugs and eternal misery. They
recognise the possible cost, but are adamant it is a risk worth taking.

AUTUMN TITLES
In ENGLAND'S
EASTENDERS, Richard Lewis, reveals the true story of why David
Beckham joined Manchester United and not Spurs. The chapter will undoubtedly
be hot property in terms of serialization.

In
New York the Art world has just exploded again with major federal investigations
on Tax Evasion by collectors with dealers involved. One dealer is the
ex head of Sotheby's Modern Art Department who came to look at the Salvador
Dali painting "The Eye" that was the central theme of the indictment
against Tod Volpe, author of FRAMED. Publication could not be
more timely with FRAMED providing the inside scoop on such illicit activities.
Volpe will be visiting the UK in September to promote his book. Several
major US publishers have signed confidentiality letters and are awaiting
the edited manuscript, due towards the end of this month.
BACKLIST
TITLES IN THE NEWS
CONFESSIONS OF A SOCIOPATHIC SOCIAL CLIMBER (WHAT KATYA DID NEXT
in the UK) continues to climb up the New York Times bestseller list.
This week it has hit No.14. There
are now 171,000 hardback copies in circulation in US and another print
run is anticipated after Adèle Lang's debut on the Regis & Kelly
show on Friday 28th June. The success of CONFESSIONS has boosted sales
of HOW TO SPOT A B*STARD BY HIS STAR SIGN in the US and the UK.
Paul
Ferris, co-author of DEADLY DIVISIONS and THE FERRIS CONSPIRACY has
been the victim of a blatant breach of human rights. After his release
from prison in January his bail was revoked last month with no explanation,
no charges and no conviction. Since then he has been in prison where
he was initially refused access to a doctor and mail from his lawyer
was opened both of which are against the law and prevented him fighting
his appeal. Last
Friday his English lawyer submitted her formal case to the Home Office.
Their decision was made on the morning of 12 June, faxed to the prison
and Ferris was out within the hour. Reg McKay, Paul Ferris's co-author
has the the formal statements from the Home Office saying that Strathclyde
Police "had insufficient evidence", that Paul had been charged
with nothing, not even interviewed and his supervising officer had described
him as a "model client". A major scandal is about to break.

SAVED
BY MY FACE has just been reviewed by the editor of the Polish daily
newspaper, Dziennik Polski:
'After going through the memoir of Jerzy Lando it is difficult to
shake off the weight of emotion that seizes you. It is difficult to
return to so-called normal, regular life.'
