week with the announcement in the DAILY TELEGRAPH that 'Gwyneth Paltrow
is to star as tortured poet Plath in BBC film' The role of Hughes has
not yet been cast although Colin Firth and Russell Crowe are among names
being considered. David Thompson, Head of BBC Films, was also responsible
for the film IRIS about the illness and death of the novelist Iris Murdoch.
BBC Films made the announcement about Paltrow at the Cannes Festival as
soon as she agreed to star. THE BALLAD OF SYLVIA AND TED has also been
mentioned in reviews of Jillian Beckers new book about Plath which is

THE
OSBOURNES, which has been hugely popular in the States, begins on
MTV this Sunday. In the wake of all the announcements about Ozzy Osbourne
books Mainstream are delighted to announce that we have already published
PARANOID: BLACK DAYS WITH SABBATH AND OTHER STORIES by Mick Wall
(£9.99 pbk). Wall was a PR for Sabbath and his book forms a fly
on the wall account of life with the band. The precursor to the TV series!
BOOKS IN THE MEDIA:
THE
JOURNEYMAN by Michael Murray published on 23rd May has been receiving
excellent reviews. Following a superb review in THE GUARDIAN there was
an even better one in THE SUNDAY TIMES the following day:
'It is Murray's eloquent, almost poetic prose that singles out this
work from your traditional, battered-skull, numbskull-brain, clichéd
boxing biography.... Certainly good enough to be a contender for this
year's William Hill Book of the Year Award... A journeyman in the ring
he may have been, but Murray turns out to be a knockout, top-of-the-rankings
writer... This book is a real winner.'
And Finally...
The Bookseller is sponsoring the annual book trade five-a-side
football championships. At this year Bookseller Fives (Sunday 23rd June

to watch while they eat their barbecue lunch. Five authors will play against
a "Book Trade All Stars" team! As one of the UKs leading
sports publishers Mainstream are calling on authors past and present to
offer their services for the match. There will be stories and pictures
of the event in the magazine.
